Recently I photographed local successful author Neil Grimmett. Photographing individual people is my most favourite type of photography as there is time to talk to the person and play around with ideas. Neil started by telling me a bit about his past and his adventures in writing. After over 80 books Neil has quite a few tales and has met many people along the way. I asked Neil to continue talking whilst I took photos of him as I wanted him to feel at ease and for the photos to look as natural as possible. His wife in the meantime very kindly gave me a cup of coffee. I then showed Neil the photos on the camera straight away so he could see what sort of progress we were making and if the photos were going in the direction of what he had originally envisioned for use on the Amazon website where he sells many of his titles.
In an hour we had taken photos all around the house where Neil and his wife live, and explored many ideas. I especially liked the light that was pouring through a large window on the first floor, it created some lovely shadows. It was a relaxed and fun session for all and the results turned out very well. The shoot was done somewhat in the style of photographer Marion Ettlinger as Neil said he liked her photography very much. I liked the fact that Neil wanted black and white as I think it is much more evocative than colour.
Hopefully I can take some more photos of authors as I found it a very interesting shoot.
