Last night at Bridgwater College’s Cannington centre a fire drill was held. One of the student accommodation blocks was used as with multiple floors and 49 students living there it was a good challenge for local firefighters. Alarms were sounded, smoke machines were brought in to add realism, and some key exits were blocked off to make students think about which alternative routes of escape they could use in the event of a real fire.
During the fire drill almost all the students were quickly evacuated and counted, but a select few were deliberately left in the building so firefighters could locate and rescue them. The firemen were all kitted up, complete with breathing apparatus and special tape was stuck to the breathing masks to impair visibility in the same way that vision would be impaired from the black smoke in a real fire.
It was quite a sight with lots going on. It just goes to show what an involved operation it is at the scene of a fire.
